With five English teams making it through to the last 16 of the Champions League, Bookmakers are understandably starting to run scared of the Premier League clubs.
English teams now make up just short of a third of the Champions League teams remaining with Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all making it through, meaning five English teams are in the knockout phase for the first-time ever.
“It has been a brilliant group phase for the Premier League sides, with four of them topping their groups – ironically, the only side not to were the English champions Chelsea,” said OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton.
“Bookmakers have sliced the odds on an English winner down to 6/4, that was a big as 3/1 at the start and an all English final is 6/1, and that was over 20/1 before the start of the season – but it is easy to see why the Bookmakers are nervous as there is a chance there could be be five English clubs in the last eight as a team from the same country can’t be drawn against each other.
“Looking at the odds for the English sides, Man City are second favourites for the whole thing at 9/2 – only behind PSG. Of the others, Tottenham look great value at 20/1 – they came through a group with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in great style, but the general public are clearly taking into account their league form, which is not the best in comparison.”
