There have been some notable investors in British clubs in recent history from Abramovich at Chelsea, the Glazers at Manchester United and of course Sheikh Mansour at Man City it certainly isn’t uncommon to hear rumours of interest in clubs up and down the country.
But perhaps one of the most interesting is the most recent rumour of investment for Wrexham from non-other than Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds, known most for his roles as Marvel’s Deadpool and Pikachu in Pokemon Detective.
In fact, Reynolds isn’t alone in his interest as he is joined by his friend Rob McElhenney, best known for the television series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Wrexham since 2011 have been fan-owned so any potential takeover has to be put forward to the a ‘Supporters Trust Board’. When the identity of the potential backers has revealed the membership it won the approval of a huge 97% of the board.
So there is no doubt the news was met with positive reception from the supporter’s trust board.
Trust director Spencer Harris, told BBC Radio Wales
“We started talking through representatives of theirs, talking about the club, and we’re now in a position where we are able, following the SGM on Tuesday night, to get into detailed discussions about what a takeover deal could look like.
“There is some way to go and at the end of the day it will be the supporters who decide what the future direction of the club will be.”
Its extremely early days but interest has been confirmed by the Canadian actor on Twitter and in case you thought it was a throwaway comment to add more substance to the potential talks progressing – Reynolds and McElhenney were rumoured to have been interested in Hartlepool but were actively discouraged from progressing, news which has obvioiusly disappointed Hartepool supporters. So it seems the pair have at very least been looking at potential clubs to invest in.
Reynolds is certainly no stranger to investing in businesses as he invested and actively promoted Aviation American gin who just In August 2020 drinks was bought out by drinks powerhouse Diageo as part of a $610m deal. For which Reynolds is reported to have profited extremely well off.
Although it seems more like a plot of one of his movies , The Red dragons could very well see a celebrity A-lister in Reynolds and celebrated actor Rob McElhenney become their new owners bringing some star power to North Wales.
