Manchester City are the favourites to win the Premier League title next season despite finishing 18 points behind Liverpool this year.
City are expected to invest heavily this summer with Guardiola being given a £150m transfer fund to bolster his aging squad. A recent decision by UEFA to overturn Manchester City’s transfer ban and reduce their fine by £18m has further boosted Guardiola, with £18m being roughly the equivalent to an elite player’s salary.
According to the odds, City will come back stronger next year and they’re currently 10/11 to win the title.
Liverpool are 15/8 to defend the title, with Manchester United (15/2) and Chelsea (14/1) a long way back in the running.
“It’s a little bit surprising that Man City are favourites at this stage considering how dominant Liverpool have been in the last 12 months but optimism around City has been growing since they overcame the Champions League ban. They now know they will have more money to spend and seem determined to regain their spot at the top.” OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton said.
“At 10/11 the bookmakers think that City have a 52% chance of winning the league compared to only 35% chance of Liverpool regaining the title.”
To win the 2020/21 Premier League
Manchester City 10/11, Liverpool 15/8, Manchester United 15/2, Chelsea 14/1, Tottenham 50/1, Arsenal 50/1, Leicester 150/1
City are also favourites for this seasons Champions League title at odds of 2/1. They are strong favourites to overcome outsiders Lyon in the quarter finals but will face a tough semi final game with either Barcelona or Bayern Munich their opponents standing in their way of a Champions League final.
A champions League title for Manchester City this season will further bolster their Premier League title chances as City are set to earn £120m in prize money and TV rights if they go all the way. The prize money may be subject to a 10% cut from UEFA to mitigate lost revenue because of the corona virus but the earnings would still eclipse the £105m record set by Barcelona last season.
