Chris Froome will join the ranks of cycling’s greatest if he can claim a fifth Tour De France an the odds suggest he is very likely to do so in the coming weeks.
The world’s biggest cycling title is one of the toughest sporting achievements to accomplish, so to do it five times is something special.
Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain have all claimed the Yellow Jersey five times, and Froome will join them if he can claim victory this month.
Froome is now just 13/8 to win the Tour again, with Bookmakers not willing to take on the British star, whose entry was only confirmed this weekend as an anti-doping case was officially dropped.
“Chris Froome is determined to join the cycling greats on five wins, and he looks on course,” said OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton.
“His nearest rival looks to be his former team-mate Richie Porte – who crashed out last year – but even he is around 5/1, which just shows how short Froome is.
“But if you do fancy Froome, then we would suggest getting your money on early – once the race has begun, and the tone is set, then his odds are likely to be cut further and it won’t be long before he is odds-on.”
