Here’s Ailsa’s story….

How long have you been matched betting?

I’ve been matched betting for 3 years, 2 months and 13 days. I’m not some weirdo that remembers dates or anything. I know because I started matched betting on my 30th birthday.”

How did you hear about it?

“I read about Matched Betting on one of the parenting communities – I think it was Netmums. At the time, there were a few parents talking about it and raving about how much money they were able to make from it. My initial reaction was to think “hmmm… yeah yeah. if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” and I think that’s a normal reaction for anything like this and I left it alone. But once I’d actually heard of it, I’d see matched betting all over the place. It was really strange… loads of people were talking about it and I even had a friend that was doing it. So I spent a morning properly looking into it, showed my husband to see what he thought and then took the plunge.”

How easy was it to get started?

“I wouldn’t say it was easy as such. I know nothing about sport. I knew nothing about betting. I didn’t get odds. So, by the way, if I can learn it anybody can. It took a bit of time for me to get used to it and I was quite slow I think. I was following guides on Money Saving Expert at first, looking for everything myself and then using a spreadsheet to try and calculate my bets. How long do you spend on matched betting now?

“I’ll make time for about forty minutes to an hour per day. On a weekend, it’s more like an hour and a half. It just depends on how many offers there are or what I’m doing. I try not to let matched betting dictate my weekends. I like to get up – have breakfast and then focus on it for an hour or so. After that, I switch off and spend time with the family.”

What does an average day look like for you and where does matched betting fit into it?

No day is the same when you have a toddler and a baby. I try to have a routine – so I’ll usually wait until Minnie has gone to nursery and then do all my matched betting then. Obviously, I can’t set a timer for when Remy needs to be fed but I’m a dab hand at breast feeding and matched betting at the same time now, that’s one of the main reasons it works so well for me, I can easily fit it around my life.

“My husband and I now budget an extra £500 income per month but I’m managing to hit £650 / £700 per month these days.

What’s the most you’ve earned in any one month?

“£790 was the most. I know that there are people who hit much bigger numbers than that but I think it’s all relative to how much time you put into it and whether you’ve been lucky on one of the casino games offers.”

How much have you earned overall? Approximately?

“It’s just over £21,000.”

What does the extra money mean to you? How is it helping?

“It makes a huge difference. I used to run an event planning and event hire business that I decided to give up so that we could start a family. So there was a huge change for us in terms of income and matched betting has played a big part in filling some of that gap. It means that we can still have holidays. It means that I can shop and pamper myself. We were penny pinching and now we’re pinching pounds – but from the bookies.”

How do you explain Matched Betting to other people?

“I just explain that the bookmakers give free bets away and if you use a special calculator, you can cheat so that you always win no matter what.”
